Chinese New YearChinese New Year also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. Celebrated internationally in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese , Chinese New Year is considered to be a major holiday for the Chinese as well as ethnic groups such as the Mongolians , Koreans , the Miao (Chinese Hmong) and the Vietnamese , who were influenced by Chinese culture in terms of religious and philosophiocal worldview, language and culture in general. Chinese New Year is also the time when the largest human migration takes place when Chinese all around the world return home on Chinese New Year eve to have reunion dinner with their family. Traditional Chinese New Year Food Chinese dumplings may be divided into various subclasses. Steamed dumplings are called zhēngjiǎo. Boiled dumplings are called "water dumplings" or shuǐjiǎo. Fried dumplings are called potstickers. Dumplings that use egg rather than dough to wrap the filling are called "egg dumplings" or dànjiǎo. Dumplings are one of the major foods eaten during the Chinese New Year . The shape of a dumpling resembles a Chinese golden tael ; therefore they symbolize good fortune in the coming year. Families have dumpling wrapping parties just before New Year where they slaughter the choicest livestock, grind the meat, wrap the meat into dumplings, and freeze them outside with the help of the freezing weather. Then they boil and serve them for the Chinese New Year feast. Other foods include a whole fish, to represent togetherness and abundance, and a chicken for prosperity. The chicken must be presented with a head, tail and feet to symbolize completeness. Noodles should be uncut, as they represent long life. Chinese New Year Decorations Prior to New Year's Day, Chinese families decorate their living rooms with vases of pretty blossoms, platters of oranges and tangerines and a candy tray with eight varieties of dried sweet fruit. On walls and doors are poetic couplets, happy wishes written on red paper. These messages sound better than the typical fortune cookie messages. For instance, "May you enjoy continuous good health" and "May the Star of Happiness, the Star of Wealth and the Star of Longevity shine on you" are especially positive couplets. |
